Review: Invincible Iron Man Annual #1

Invincible Iron Man Annual #1 is a game changer from Marvel.
Released on the same day as the dead tree version you can download the book in three separate parts.

The volumes 1.1,1.2 & 1.3 are priced at £1.19 each on the marvel app and although I have seen it cheaper in paper format (£3.30 for it all) it’s a start.

WRITER: Matt Fraction
PENCILS: Salvador LarrocaCarmine Di Giandomenico
THE STORY:
The Mandarin is a collection of lies, stories, myths, and legends. But two things are true: He wears, upon each finger, an alien weapon of unimaginable power…and he’s going to kill Tony Stark. Is he a violent street crook born in a brothel? The scion of an aristocratic dynasty? Was his father was a petty criminal or an ambassador? Was his mother a British noblewoman, or maybe a dragon-chasing wastrel lost in the underbelly of the world? He’s a murderer, a businessman, an artist, a terrorist, a hero. And this is the story of his life.

The story itself doesn’t actually have Iron Man in it, but concentrates on The Mandarin as he attempts to revise and publish his history. The cast of characters Matt Fraction uses in this story help to continue the legend of The Mandarin and his history. The art bothered me at first, when I saw the previews, but Carmine Di Giandomenico settles in nicely to the role and the style of the story.
As the story progresses, you wonder where it’s going to go next – and your thoughts change from page to page (or screen to screen!)
If you are looking for a story which connects into the current Iron Man status quo, then this is not the story for you.
If you want to see a mad dictator with power rings attempt to change his personal history, buy it now!
All in all a good (but not amazing) start to Marvel taking the mobile comics medium by the horns.
