“Off The Shelf” – One Week Later: iVerse Talk Digital Subscriptions

Following the talk about Apple’s digital subscription model, iVerse Media – creators of the iPhone and iPad Comics+ app – have the following to say:

It’s amazing how different things can be in a week.

This time last week our partnership with Diamond was announced, and speculation as to exactly what we were doing began immediately on all fronts. We trekked up to ComicsPRO in Dallas with Diamond and started the extremely important process of talking publicly with retailers to begin to evolve the program to fit their needs.

I want to thank everyone at ComicsPRO for allowing us to attend, and letting us be a part of the meeting. I can truly say it was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in comics thus far. This industry is filled with great people, and the team behind ComicsPRO put on one of the best organized and most productive events I’ve ever attended.

We’re already evolving the program to include more customization for retailers after having discussions with them at the meeting, and we’re keeping a close eye on online feedback to the explanations of the program as well. If you have thoughts about it, I’m always available on Twitter, and will respond to as much as I can.

Yesterday, Apple made an announcement about subscriptions that has riled the Internet up as well. If you haven’t been following it, what has happened is that Apple has made the subscription option used for “The Daily” available for all iOS developers. That, by itself, would be great. They have also officially made the change that Apps can no longer link to outside stores, and that anytime a user signs up with a service like Netflix or Rhapsody from the application, that they don’t have a choice but to do so through Apple.

As you can imagine, this has sparked quite a bit of controversy and discussion.

Currently for us this is largely not an issue. The kind of subscriptions they’re talking about are time based, and not product based like you would think of a traditional comic book subscription. You can’t subscribe to 6 issues of a series, for example, but you can subscribe to a title for 6 months. As we all know, with comics, sometimes it can take more than 6 months to get those 6 issues out…so we won’t be participating in the subscription program in that capacity right now.

I do have to wonder if moves like this will encourage companies like Netflix and Rhapsody to embrace other tablet platforms more quickly, and to promote those devices over the iPad and iPhone. HP has some very compelling stuff happening with WebOS…Android Honeycomb looks fantastic…and I have to say, I really dig the look of Windows Phone 7.

2011 is going to be a very interesting year in the digital space.

Commando comic turns 50 – Goes Digital

Thanks to Downthetubes.net:

Along with the latest issues of Commando – which includes a reprint of an issue from 1970 drawn by now top 2000AD artist Cam Kennedy – comes news from DC Thomson that their digital editions of the war edition comic are now available for iPhone and iPad. Check out the information on this development below, after we give you the rundown on the new print editions.

There’s much more to come from Britain’s only surviving war/action adventure comic in its Golden Jubilee year with a full programme planned to mark the title’s 50th anniversary. Favourite characters are due to make returns alongside new heroes specially created for the anniversary year along with delving deep into Commando‘s past to dust off classic stories like “Walk or Die” that haven’t seen the light of day for many years.

With subscriptions up 15 per cent over the past year, helped no doubt by editor Calum Laird and his team’s determination to get the message out about the comic, Commando is one war veteran that isn’t done fighting yet.

Archie Comics: Day & Date on Graphic.Ly

This is from Archie Comics site – looks like they are making moves on their digital commitment. I’ve found that, in the UK at least, Archie don’t feature as much – perhaps this is a good way for them to reach out to new markets.

Archie Comics Logo

Archie Comics is thrilled announce that Graphic.ly will be offering Archie digital comics on the same day the physical books are released!

Archie continues to lead the comics industry in embracing the digital medium, as well as making it easier than ever for our fans to get their favorite Archie comics.

Starting in April, Archie Comics will be making its 6 core titles (Archie, Archie and Friends, Betty, Veronica, Betty and Veronica and Jughead) available day-and-date through Graphic.ly.

As with the previously announced plans to make Archie comics available day-and-date through the Archie Comics app, the Archie digital titles at Graphic.ly will be priced at an amazing $1.99.

“When we announced plans to go day-and-date through our own, standalone app, our friends at Graphic.ly immediately reached out and said ‘we want to do this, too,’” said Archie Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “They’ve been so professional, easy to work with and innovative in everything they do, it took less than a minute to agree. We like and respect the team at Graphic.ly and are excited to get more creative and forward-looking in the work we do with them. As always, Archie will continue to push forward on digital and lead the charge into this new frontier.”

Graphic.ly isn’t just a digital marketplace for comics; it is an online community for fans and creators alike, and Archie is very happy to be part of this community.

“We’re are extremely excited to partner with Archie Comics in taking this next step in their digital strategy,” said Micah Baldwin, CEO of Graphic.ly, “Archie Comics are an institution and we’re proud to be able to offer them to our community, especially now that their titles are going day and date. We consider the team behind Archie Comics to be a big part in what we’ve been doing at Graphic.ly and I personally can’t wait to see what more great things will come from our partnership.”

Users can go to Graphicly.com to get our apps or they go to Graphic.ly’s Archie page to read Archie Comics on the web.

From the Beat

While running around Toy Fair we ran into Wizard’s Gareb Shamus who told us that the newWizard World Digital will Launch February 2 as a free app for iPads, iPhones and online. It will be ad supported. He stressed that the new incarnation of the magazine will take advantage of all the things you can do on the internet. We asked him about the difficulty of competing for news in the current sphere where nerd news is usually broken at the Daily News or USA Today and he replied (paraphrasing) that the news wouldn’t be what you would expect. “We can tell our audience of millions about something cool they’ve never heard of.”

Wizard World shows are doing very well, he said. “It’s a story that no one is talking about.”

We’ll say this: Shamus is a man who believes in his brand.

Link: Jim Lee’s Digital visual analogy

From The Savage Critics:

A lot of time was spent on discussing Digital, as you might expect, but early on on the first day, DC co-Publisher Jim Lee made a visual analogy that sort of guided my thinking for the rest of the weekend.

Jim held up two hands. In one hand he had a regular 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper, and in the other, he had a piece of dental floss. The former, he said, represented the revenues from print comics. The latter? Revenue from digital.

Now, clearly, digital will continue to grow — heck, maybe with a lot of effort and brain cycles, it might even grow to be the size, say, of an index card, but the actual real on-the-ground reality of digital comics sales are that they are a virtually (heh) insignificant way of making money for the publishers.
