ICv2 – DC Announces Digital ‘Fringe’ Comic

Joshua Jackson’s character on the enigmatic Fox series Fringe, Peter Bishop, may have disappeared from history in last season’s finale, but he has reappeared as the author of a digital comic from DC Comics.  The first installment of Jackson’s Beyond the Fringe comic, which features art by Jorge Jimenez and a cover from Drew Johnson, is available from DC starting today.  Additional issues in the 3-issue Peter and the Machine arc written by Jackson will be published at 4 week intervals, while a second monthly series of “What If” stories based on storylines from the series will commence in two weeks—so there will be a new digital Fringe comics available every two weeks.

The fourth season of the Fringe TV series, created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci, will debut this Friday, September 23rd, 2011 on the Fox network.  Jackson’s three issue arc depicts events that occurred between the end of season three and the premiere of season four.  Art released by DC from the first issue would appear to indicate that Peter, who appears to be writing one of those “First People diaries,” might have had something to do with “The First People” hoax, Walter’s clever deception that the doomsday machine he constructed in the future (and shipped back to the present) was actually the work of some ancient race of savants.

At this point it is not known if DC will release a paper graphic novel collection of its Fringe comics, but judging by the success of the Heroes graphic novels in the traditional format, it certainly remains a possibility.
