Marvel Comics and Rockstar Games Team Up For “Max Payne 3” Digital Comic – Comic Book Resources

Between two awesome games (the original and “The Fall of Max Payne”), as well as a feature film featuring Mark Wahlberg, “Max Payne” has been through a lot over the years. Next month, he makes his prominent return to the game scene with Rockstar Games’ “Max Payne 3,” a gritty new adventure that pits him against the mob and gun-runners in San Paolo as he sets out to rescue a colleague’s wife from harm.

Those unfamiliar with Max’s plight over the years (he did lose his family and develop a nasty addiction to painkillers) are about to get some major clarification. Rockstar Games has announced that it is teaming up with Marvel Comics to produce a three-issue digital comic series that provides more back-story on the troubled cop.

Sam Lake, the writer who penned the original game’s script, has signed on to co-author the comic book series alongside Rockstar’s own Dan Houser, who wrote the script for “Max Payne 3.” The series will also feature cover art from comic industry veteran Greg Horn (“Elektra,” “Green Lantern Corps”) and pencil/inks by Fernando Blanco (“Fallen Angel,” “Army of Darkness”).

The books will be available for download through Rockstar Newswire’s service, as well as Rockstar’s official Max Payne 3 page and other “additional digital comic channels.”

The focus of the comics will surround the events from the first two “Max Payne” games, leading up to the third chapter. Rockstar stated this story arc will “shed new light on Max’s early years.” While a release date wasn’t given, the first issue is expected to arrive shortly after the game’s arrival on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which is scheduled for May 15.
