10 Questions With… Kwanza Johnson

1. Who are you and what are you working on right now? (2 questions in 1, I know!)

Former online editor for Marvel.com then DC Comics’s Zuda and DC Digital initiatives. Digital comics evangelist currently working with ne’er-do-well Andy Belanger on a Insta★COP [ instagram.com/insta_cop ], a comic series delivered across social media channels.

2. What drew you to digital comics?

The distribution method and search. There are far less logistics in digital publishing. Getting your work out for the masses to discover and enjoy immeasurably easier than print.

3. Webcomics or digital comics?

There is no difference between them, in my opinion.

4. What do you think works with digital comics?

I am not sure I totally understand that question, but I think what works best are comics that tailor their work towards digital. Right now, most print comics are retrofitted to work on mobile devices.

5. Can digital comics replace print comics?

It will replace them. That is sort of inevitable. When that will be? I’m not sure, but likely soon.

6. How can print comics work with digital comics?

They already are. Print sales have been up since digital became a regular feature of the comics industry. As with my previous answer, I think anticipating digital readership should influence how comics are produced. I created a presentation on it titled, Modular Comics 2.0 that I put up on SlideShare.

7. What don’t you like about digital comics?

That there is less original material in digital. I am not privy to the sales numbers but I am surprised more independent creators are not adopting it in droves.

8. What digital comics/webcomics do you read?

Regularly I read, PvP, Penny-Arcade, Max Overreacts, Smash and The Meek.

9. Where do you see digital comics going from here?

Up. The advantages of digital content and distribution are just enormous. Once the audience is larger, the deluge of comics will be something to watch.

10. Who do you think we should look out for in digital comics?

Image Comics. The way they operate gives them the flexibility to pivot in the market simply by the ambitions of the creators they service. If more creators joined forces under the Image brand, it would be a pretty amazing to see what impact that has.
