The Hartlepool Monkey is created by Wilfrid Lupano and Jérémie Moreau, and is a tragi-comic fable of war and jingoism, inspired by the famous legend. In 1814, off the Durham coast, a French warship is wrecked and a monkey is washed ashore. The townsfolk mistake it for a Frenchman and the monkey is court-martialled and set to face execution.
Forbidden Planet said of the book, “It’s an astonishing story and you will find yourself both upset with injustice and anger and yet at the same time laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of so much of it and many of the characters, and the sheer absurd nature of it all.”
Down the Tubes said, “Mixing farce with drama, you’re quickly pulled into the story, which exposes the very worst of human stupidity and prejudice, weaving a macabre but skillfully crafted tale.”
The Hartlepool Monkey is published by Knockabout and available on SEQUENTIAL for 50% off the print price – just £5.99/$8.99.
