EXCLUSIVE! Mark Waid talks Marvel Infinite, Thrillbent 2.0, the future of digital comics and Kingdom Come the iPad app! | Pipedream Comics

Having written some of the finest comic stories of all time (Kingdom Come, Flash, JLA, Daredevil, Superman), superstar comic writer Mark Waid turned his back on print in 2012 and declared his allegiance to the world of digital. Over the past 12 months he has established himself as the true godfather of digital comics, thanks to the launch of Marvel’s Infinite series, but also with his creator owned web portal Thrillbent and its lead title Insufferable. As one of the most high profile advocates of the brave new world of digital publishing we asked Mark the secrets to a great digital comic and where things are heading in 2013?

What was the inspiration for setting up Thrillbent? Was it intended as way for you to write and publish the books you wanted to without relying on a major publisher? Or was it as a way to help dip your toe on the emerging world of digital comics?

MW: Originally, the former–it was a reaction to the staggering print costs faced by smaller publishers that will probably only rise. And it was also to prove my conviction that the future of the market is the shift away from Big Distributors and towards a smaller economy that’s a direct link between artists and their audience. But honestly, as we began to pull Thrillbent together and I began producing more material, I got more into the actual content–into the process that enables you to tell a story differently in digital.

Hellboy in Hell: Print vs. Digital | Jim Rugg

Mike Mignola returned to monthly comic books with Hellboy in Hell (December 2012). He hasn’t drawn a regular Hellboy series since The Island in 2005. I enjoy his storytelling, drawing style, humor, and design so I was excited when Hellboy in Hell #1 hit shelves. I can not remember the last time I went to a comic book shop to buy a new comic book on new comic book day. This was going to be great!

Except, it wasn’t.

I was a little disappointed but couldn’t figure out why because Mignola’s drawing and storytelling were great as usual. When I spoke to Jasen Lex about it, I learned he thought the new comic was fantastic. After a brief conversation, I realized that Lex had read a digital copy (on his beautiful Mac display) while I had read a print copy.

We decided to compare his digital copy and my print copy page by page, panel by panel.

I found the digital copy stunning in comparison. The subtle palette’s warm and cool colors complimented Mignola’s immaculate compositions and storytelling in ways I had missed on my readings of the print edition. *(It should be noted that the digital copy also lends itself to zooming in and out of the artwork and focusing on individual panels, as a fan of Mignola’s compositional choices and drawing, this definitely adds to my enjoyment.)

I had to take back all the negative thoughts I had been sending Dave Stewart’s direction. Each panel and page looked great.

But the print edition now looked even worse compared with the digital copy.

Here is the synopsis and the first episode of the new ‘HillSide Campus’ digital comic.

Three campus dudes, Davy, Simo and Kevin are your normal campus buddies. Well not quite. They are more adventurous and almost moronic in their quest to spice up their lives in campus away from their homes.

In their second year in campus, there is a mystery of a disappearance of a third year girl. Five months later, they stumble on the girl’s secret blog diary. They get embroiled in the case as they follow her personal blog where she has left clues and to what could have led to her disappearance.

On her secret blog, she has described different characters in the campus. From lecturers who had advances on her, her ex boyfriends, the scams going on in the campus, the boy she liked and everyone who had threatened her etc.

But her blog is full of various issues any that would have led her to her death. The three decide to follow up on the clues that she has left to unveil the mystery, but they get more than they bargained for…

Apart from following the girl’s blog, the three students get in trouble with their lecturers for their behavior. Love and relationships are poured into the mix and this makes their life in campus more they could have imagined.

Read all of Kyle Baker’s graphic novels online for FREE

For reasons unknown—but probably just for the good of society—Kyle Baker (Deadpool, Plasic Man) has put most of his creator-owned body of work online for FREE including early classics, THE COWBOY WALLY SHOW and WHY I HATE SATURN, and later works I Die at Midnight, King David, The Bakers, Special Forces, Nat Turner and more. This is a treasure trove of reading (although some of the scans are a bit small—but who cares: it’s free.)

Wally and Why I Hate Saturn were among the first standalone graphic novels of the post-Maus era and remain as biting and hilarious as when they were written. Cowboy Wally is a behind-the-music look at a kids entertainer, from his early years to his production of Hamlet behind bars. It’s also one of the funniest comics of al times. Saturn is just as funny, a social satire about dating in the 90s that exists in a world long gone by—a long ago place where sexting and OK Cupid didn’t exist—but still hilarious.

Consider these two must reads—both for content and the influence they had on the emerging graphic novel genre—but don’t miss the rest either:

YOU ARE HERE—a man with the perfect life has to figure out how to tell his fiancee about his secret past as a criminal.

I DIE AT MIDNIGHT—a mad who has taken poison has to find the antidote before midnight in this Y2K thriller.

SPECIAL FORCES—savage satire about the our wars in the Middle East as the Army employs special needs troops.

NAT TURNER—the history of the rebel slave

KING DAVID—a retelling of the biblical tale

THE BAKERS—family humor

HOW TO DRAW STUPID —drawing tips for the intelligent

There’s much more at Baker’s website if you poke around.

In New Digital Comic Books, Every Tap Brings a Surprise – NYTimes.com

“AVENGERS VS. X-MEN” is giving fans what they have long come to expect from Marvel Comics: epic slugfests and earth-shattering perils rendered vividly on the page by prominent writers and artists. But this time around, the publisher has added something new: its first Infinite Comic, a digital-only prelude to “Avengers vs. X-Men” that was released with issue No. 1 of the print series last month. It represents another step by the comic book industry toward embracing the digital format, and one that holds the potential to push traditional comic book storytelling to a new level.

Marvel has issued its first Infinite Comic, a digital-only prelude to the “Avengers vs. X-Men” series that began publishing in print last month.

“This is the first time we’ve created a comic book story for the hand-held device,” said Axel Alonso, Marvel’s editor in chief. “It keeps all the familiar conventions of the comic book — panels, borders, captions and balloons. But it’s not animation — there’s no voice-over, there’s no score — and, most importantly, the reader still controls the experience.”

EXCLUSIVE: Damon Lindelof On His And Jeff Lemire’s “Batman” Digital Comic – Comic Book Resources

As part of DC Comics’ ever-expanding online empire, in April the publisher announced a new “Batman” digital series which will feature stand alone stories by all-star creative teams like B. Clay Moore and Ben Templesmith; Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman and Joshua Hale Fialkov and Phil Hester. But the dynamic duo that had everyone seeking out the proverbial Bat-Signal was Hollywood heavyweight Damon Lindelof and multiple Eisner Award nominee Jeff Lemire.

For those who missed Oceanic Airlines Flight 815, Lindelof co-created “Lost” with J.J. Abrams and Jeffrey Lieber and is now a highly influential writer/producer having worked on such tentpole projects as “Cowboys & Aliens,” “Star Trek” and Ridley Scott’s “Alien” prequel “Prometheus,” which will be released on June 8.

Lemire’s star has also risen mercurially the last few years as the Canadian cartoonist has told epic stories with some of DC’s second(“Superboy”), third (“Animal Man”) and even fourth-tier (“Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. “) superheroes. But it was his creator-owned Vertigo series “Sweet Tooth”, which he writes and illustrates, that captured Lindelof’s eye.

After Lindelof tweeted about the series shortly after its debut, the two became friends, leading the Hollywood power player to write the introduction to Lemire’s forthcoming graphic novel, “The Underwater Welder.”

Lindelof told CBR News exclusively that his obsession of all things Lemire is what lured him to the Batcave, but as a long-time fan of the Dark Knight, writing the Dark Knight Detective is also a childhood dream come true.

The master storyteller also shared which Batman comics influenced him growing up in Teaneck, New Jersey, which part of the Dark Knight’s lore drives his and Lemire’s story and why writing digital comics is the perfect part-time medium for him.

iVerse CEO Michael Murphey on the other digital comics | Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources

Michael Murphy gives some great interviews and it’s interesting to hear his thoughts on digital comics:

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had a barrage of press releases from comiXology about exclusive deals it’s made with publishers, including, most recently, an agreement with Marvel to digitally distribute single-issue comics. That made me think about the digital comics market as a whole, and how these exclusives would affect the other big digital distributor, iVerse. So I called and asked.

What I was surprised to hear was that iVerse CEO Michael Murphey isn’t particularly bothered by these exclusives. That’s because he doesn’t see iVerse as going head to head with comiXology; he sees them as serving different markets in different ways, and the exclusives don’t affect them as much as you might think. Read on to get his very different take on the digital comics market.

Robot 6: I’m going to just ask you point-blank: comiXology has announced a number of exclusives lately, which shuts you out of part of the comics market. What does that mean for iVerse and for Diamond Digital, and what will you do about it?

Michael Murphey: There’s a couple of things that are going on right now. ComiXology, it seems to me, is trying to recreate the direct market in digital form. That’s not where iVerse has ever been. We have always thought of ourselves as a newsstand rather than the direct market. We do better than most people think because most of our customers are not direct market customers. We sell a ton of children’s product through Comics Plus Kids, we have Archie Comics and we have Pocket God comics—one thing you are going to see is we are launching that New Crusaders product with Archie. We are also rebranding our app and launching web and Android versions before the end of the month.

Our library program is going to be a very large revenue generator for ourselves. We announced it three or four weeks ago, and the response from the library community has been overwhelming. And all those places are different things we are doing that are finding new readers, reaching out to where the new readers are.

Marvel and iVerse have a good relationship. We haven’t ever sold day-and-date product for Marvel. We have always sold either single issues or graphic novels, and since we switched to graphic novels a month ago, our Marvel sales are better than they have ever been. We have started focusing on graphic novels — not just with Marvel; we have graphic novels with a lot of people. The graphic novels have done very well. The higher price point actually works really well for customers who aren’t direct market customers because they are used to e-book prices. The price of a graphic novel is comparable to an e-book price, so that is not bothersome to them. That is very exciting, and it is directing some of the ways we are modifying ourselves as we go along to accommodate that kind of customer.

The other thing we are doing that is a big focus for us that we believe has a tremendous amount of potential is the non-English language market. We will be making an announcement soon. It’s something we have been doing for a while, and some of those markets are pretty exciting. When you look at movies that are comic book based, look at the money they are making overseas in non-English-language areas, there’s a tremendous amount of opportunity in those places, and we are excited about that for the entire industry.

ICv2 – Image’s Digital Sales Are a ‘Double Digit Percentage’

ICv” have an interesting interview up – and the figures about digital sales caught my eye!

We recently caught up with Image Publisher Eric Stephenson to talk about the comics market and Image’s place in it.  In Part 2 of this three part interview, Stephenson talks about the digital and graphic novel portions of the market, and reveals that digital is now a “double digit percentage” of Image’s sales.  In Part 3, Stephenson talked about what makes Image unique, and argues that “over the last 20 years, you can’t point to anything new that has been created by Marvel and DC that’s had any lasting impact.”  And in Part 1, Stephenson talked about his view of the comics market, including the revelation that Saga #1’s four printings now total around 70,000 copies, and discusses what numbers are revealed and what they tell us.

Can you characterize digital as a percentage of your sales?

It varies title per title.  The overall percentage is small.  There are books that do very well and there are books that, for whatever reason, don’t do as well digitally.

Single digit percentages?

Oh no.  There are titles that do single digits, but overall I would say digital is a double digit percentage of sales.
