Graphicly Highlight: Irredeemable #25

Boom! Studios have excelled with this series, and it’s hard to believe that we are already on issue #25! With Mark Waid on the helm and after his success in Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright this series is really something that needs to be read.

The beauty of Superman is that he can deal with that level of adulation without it going to his head, without it warping him, but he’s a very special individual. We presume, whenever we write superheroes and we come up with superhero origins, that anybody who gets the powers of a superhero — even if they are like Spider-Man and they’ve got things they’ve got to work out that issue and responsibility and power and responsibility — we assume that they eventually have the emotional makeup it takes to overcome these things. Well, what if you gave that level of power to someone who, at heart, didn’t have that emotional capability?

Issue #25 takes you to the fallout of the major arc which I thought would be the apex of the series – now I release its just the beginning!

It’s a super-powered prison fight the likes of which you’ve never seen! There’s strength in numbers on the prison planet where a collection of the universe’s worst super-criminals have been gathered. And the Plutonian is a loner. It’s a recipe for disaster and destruction! The Plutonian has a plan for freedom — just as soon as he deals with a group of psychotic killers that make him look like the picture of sanity. Mark Waid’s Eisner and Harvey-nominated series continues!

Graphic.Ly Sale: Rising Stars From Top Cow

This is the phenomenal book that launched J. Michael Straczynski’s comic book career after his success with the TV series Babylon 5. The first 8 issue arc sets the stage for the 24 issue series, introducing us to The Specials, and today, it can be yours for $0.99 an issue.

113 kids were affected when a mysterious light appeared over Pederson, Illinois, and it will change the world. This is a great chance to get to know this story at a bargain!

Pick up some Rising Stars today and bring some moonbeams home in a jar.

New comics released this week:

GrpahicLy Highlight: Blood Nation #1

In 2026, the world has been ravaged by a brutal war between humans and vampires. The vampires have been beaten back to the borders of the old Soviet Union, where they have established a sovereign “Blood Nation.” Now that the vamps have unearthed old Soviet nuclear weapons, the United States has sent Ethan Cutter and his Red Death Commandos into the Blood Nation to take the fight to the bloodsuckers’ leader, the immortal and vampiric Genghis Khan.

Out of the three main genre’s of horror – Werewolves, Zombies and Vampires – its Vampires I like the best. Blade, 30 Days of Night etc. This is another title to add to the list! The concept is excellent and what you want to read. The art is perfect for the story as is the writing. there is a grim ‘gallows’ humour to the story too, which only adds to it.

I will be reading more of this!

Graphic.Ly: Relaunch, Latest Comics

With the beta testing of their web service well under way, and plans to relaunch the iOS apps too, Grpahic.Ly are still releasing new comics on a daily basis on the web, Android and iPhone/iPad.

First onto the highlights of the week:

The great innovator of our industry brings his inimitable talents back to the direct market in an explosive line of comics that nobody is prepared for! In this first ongoing series, Soldier Zero, Stan teams up with critically acclaimed writer Paul Cornell (Action Comics, Doctor Who) and artist Javier Pina (Superman, Batman) for a dramatic, action-packed superhero scorcher. When an alien parasite falls to Earth, wheelchair-bound college student Stewart Travers becomes infected, and goes through super-human changes that no mortal could imagine. Forced into a galactic war that’s chosen Earth as the battlefield, Stewart defends the front line as Soldier Zero! Half-Human. Half-Alien. All Weapon. The intergalactic war hits Earth this October in a new ongoing series from Stan Lee and BOOM! Studios! Featuring covers by fan-favorite artists Trevor Hairsine (X-Men), Dave Johnson (Punisher).

Now struggling to rectify his memories of his father with the evidence of the evil monster he may have actually been, Brian’s life is further shook when new bodies begin to surface. The killer has returned and Brian is terrified that it might be him.

There’s no time for chatting! It all about comics this week. First, Stan Lee in collaboration with BOOM! Studios has released three new series: Solider Zero, The Traveler and Starborn. Each one is written by a different creator, and they are awesome. You should totally go check them out.

Finally, the best horror comic of 2011, Josh Fialkov’s Echoes. Super solid. A great read. ”To some extent we all live in the shadows and inherit the sins of our fathers. Brian Cohn is dealing with it more than most. Already managing schizophrenia inherited from his father and expecting his first child with his wife, Brian is shocked when his father confesses to the murder of numerous young girls on his death bed in an Alzheimer’s induced rant. Eco Comics Team Up With Graphic.Ly

Eco Comics are now expanding themselves to the Graphic.Ly network. I also mentioned them last December:

Eco Comics plants an environmentally-friendly comic book evolution

Publisher Mohawk Media has today announced that its Eco Comics range – paperless comic books and graphic novels designed with the specific purpose of having a minimal carbon footprint – is now available via digital comic book platform Graphicly, creating what it anticipates will be an evolutionary explosion for the comic book.

Graphicly will carry Eco Comics titles Heroic High, Supplanter, Pirate Queen, and more, via www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics

Graphicly’s digital comic platform includes applications to allow the purchasing and reading of digital comic books for PC and Mac desktops, and mobile phone and tablet platforms on Android, iPhone and iPad.

Eco Comics titles are available worldwide to download or view online.

Editor Stuart Buckley says: “Paper production, even via sustainable forestry, can have a disastrous effect on the environment and wildlife. Combining Eco Comics’ outlook with the digital direction of the Graphicly platform is more than a turning point in comic books and graphic novels, it’s an evolutionary explosion.”

“As you flow through the story, the panels jump out. It takes comics to a whole new level. Readers get that extra satisfaction by realising that comics can be environmentally-friendly and, as a direct result, perhaps being even more enjoyable, interactive, and accessible.”

“Readers can also discuss and review each issue, resulting in Eco Comics not only being environmentally-friendly, but fan-friendly.”

“Mohawk Media and Eco Comics will continue to use the latest technologies to help minimise the impact of print comic production on the environment, while simultaneously striving to bring the highest quality entertainment to the reader.”

Eco Comics titles are available now on Graphicly, including a free preview comic. More titles are set to be announced.

Eldritch! now on Graphic.Ly & Comixology

ANYA SOBCZEK (SUB-CHECK) is a snarling science major with an arm full of Darwin tattoos. Her brother OWEN is a sensitive young thing in a coven of teenage occultists. The Sobczek sibs have always been brutally competitive, but now that Owen’s blood has started BUBBLING with ancient tentacled abominations, their rivalry’s about to enter a vast new dimension of cosmic terror…

2010: Artists DREW RAUSCH and AARON ALEXOVICHhurled their infectious horror/comedy hybrid ELDRITCH! into blazing combat in DC Comics’ final Zuda webcomic competition. After several centuries it emerged, dazed and confused, with the word WINNER indelibly etched on its forehead.

It was promptly buried in an unmarked grave.

Today, ELDRITCH! has been shocked back to life.

Starting JUNE 15th, 2011, ELDRITCH! will be released in six 24-page installments to every digital device known to God, Man, and Shoggoth alike, including your desktop (both Mac and PC), iPad/iPod/iPhone, Android, Nook, Kindle, and eNecronomicon (pending). The issues will be priced at $0.99 each, and the first nine pages are available for FREE DOWNLOAD right now.

You have waited long enough, Elder Things. Thank you to everyone who helped push ELDRITCH! to victory in 2010, and we hope to drive you all to gibbering madness in 2011. Help spread the infection!

ABOUT AARON ALEXOVICH: Aaron is the artist/writer of the spookycute horror series Serenity Rose and the teen cyberpunk novel Kimmie66. He’s also worked as an artist on Fables, Disney’s Haunted Mansion, Confessions of a Blabbermouth, and (in the animation world) Nickelodeon’s Invader Zim and Avatar: The Last Airbender.www.heartshapedskull.com

ABOUT DREW RAUSCH: Drew Rausch is best known for his spooky scratchy cartoon work as seen in the pages of CTHULHU TALES, ZOMBIE TALES, DISNEY’S HAUNTED MANSION and THE DARK GOODBYE.
