Spirou Launches New Digital Comic, Spirou Z, And It’s Remarkable – Bleeding Cool

Spirou, the long standing French comics anthology, that was first published in the same week as Action Comics #1, has created its own separate digital comic spinoff.

Spirou Z  (the name influenced by Dragonball Z) is aimed at a family audience and has been created by many leading French and Belgian comic creators specifically for the digital reading experience, dubbed something they call Turbomedia.

Which means lost of comics based on Alex De Campi’s layered panel approach, but also examples of infinite space, different directions of reading experience, and limited animation, sound effects and other bits and bobs. It’s very effectively put together, there are lots of stories to experience, it’s basically changed the digital comics landscape in one sitting. Many will take issues in some of the areas it travels, some closer to animation than comics, but it does seem to walk the line of a digital comics anthology well. I urge you to try it for yourself.

And issue 0, is free, on the App Store right now, and it’s even in English.

The Madefire app, which delivers a fully-immersive, episodic comics reading experience, is now optimized for the brilliant 4-inch Retina display on iPhone 5 and supports Facebook single sign-on in iOS 6. The app is also available for iPhones 3GS, 4, 4S, and for 3rd and 4th generation iPod touch.

Madefire’s distinctive format features episodic, ‘short-burst’ (10-15 minute) reading, and utilizes sound, music and motion, as well as special effects, like parallax and panorama, to transport readers deep into story worlds. Madefire is also growing its catalogue of free titles and weekly releases of new episodes, giving readers even more opportunities to explore ‘short-burst’ reading. Comic Con 2012: Baboon Animation’s CIA Graphic Novel is Announced for iPhone

The award-winning interactive iPad graphic novel, CIA: Operation Ajax, will expand to iPhone and the iPod Touch, later this month, it was announced by producer Dan Burwen at a dedicated Comic Con panel today. “It was just an unbelievable honor to be a featured part of the interactive comics revolution at the this year’s Con,” said Emmy-nominated author Mike de Seve of Baboon Animation. “Ajax offers a brand new experience for fans of comics, spy stuff and cool secret history, and we’re thrilled fans saw it first in San Diego this year.

After debuting on the iPad a year ago, CIA: Operation Ajax has received much acclaim for its revolutionary approach to digital comics. De Seve and producer Daniel Burwen of publisher Cognito Comics pioneered a breakthrough method of storytelling last year by combining digital and gaming tools with the legacy of the printed page. The result is an unparalleled, interactive experience for the reader in the burgeoning tablet age.

At San Diego Comic Con, Burwen made the iPhone announcement during a colorful discussion of graphic novels, tablet storytelling and the inspiration for CIA: Operation Ajax, in his Sunday panel, “Reinventing the Graphic Novel for the iPad.” Burwen hosted a similar, popular SXSW panel on the same topic in March; watch the video here and get more information here.

Winner of the FWA Mobile of the Day Award on January 26, 2012, CIA: Operation Ajax was also recognized as an honoree at the 16th Annual Webby Awards, and was runner up for both the 2011 Best App Ever Awards and the 2012 CES Mobile Apps Showdown. This year, Flurry App Spotlight Awards also chose CIA: Operation Ajax as a finalist.

Dreamworks Feature Animation alum de Seve wrote the novel while working closely with The New York Times’ Stephen Kinzer, national bestselling author of “All the Shah’s Men.” De Seve’s script for CIA: Operation Ajax brings to the tablet the true-life spy thriller that was the the CIA’s first secret overthrow mission ever – in which the CIA and British SIS staged a revolution against Iran’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953. Combining subtle animation with a full film score, this 210-page true-life spy adventure unfolds in a groundbreaking reading experience.

Added de Seve: “Operation Ajax has already exceeded our expectations on the iPad, and we’re excited to launch it for a huge new audience on iPhone and iPod Touch.”

Packed with additional content, CIA: Operation Ajax also includes authentic declassified documents, twenty-two character dossiers, historical photos, and nine news reels from the era embedded right into the story. Starting today, fans will be able to enjoy this revolutionary graphic novel and interact with Eisenhower, Churchill, the Dulles brothers, Mossadegh, and the Shah right in their pocket.

Could The Bane Of Yoto Herald In A New Look For Digital Comics? | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

This from Bleeding Cool. This looks like fun, I’ve tried it out and it is great. In 3D it would look amazing!

Josh Viola of Leviathan Games has created The Bane Of Yoto, a digital comic for the iPhone 4 and iPads, using tilt controls to alter the way you see different levels on the page. The background and foreground of the panel turn as you twist the page.

It basically gives the illustration a three dimensionality in your hands without any pesky eye gymnastics. And while the app throws in music, and limited animation, the 3D aspect strikes me as something relatively very cheap that might add a positive reading experience to many comics, if there was a template to upload the different elements into.

The comic itself is a bit of a swords-and-sorcery monster romp, that feels far too silly without having a sense of humour about itself. But the shifting background and foreground, that feels something that has all sorts of storytelling possibilities.

The Bane Of Yoto is available free right now.

‘Thrill Electric’ Is Coming

This is something I am really looking forward to!

Thanks to Downthetubes.net for the information

Channel 4 Education has announced details of its launch of The Thrill Electric – a 10-part enhanced comic series written by Leah Moore andJohn Reppion, designed by Emma Vieceli, illustrated by the all-female comic book studio Windflower and produced by Hat Trick Productions.

It’s a story in the Victorian era that demonstrates the extraordinary parallels between the telegraph age and the internet age.

“Teenagers may be surprised to hear that online gaming, personal messaging, cyber-bullying and online profiles are all an invention of the Victorian telegraph, not the internet,” says executive producer Jonathan Davenport. “By setting our story in the sprawling metropolis of Victorian Manchester, we are taking the concerns and issues of young people today and playing them out in an atmospheric setting that will seem both exciting and strangely familiar to our readers.”

Working with the very best names in the British comic’s industry and award-winning digital agency Littleloud, The Thrill Electric tells the story of Emily Bagley, a sassy and intelligent young woman who breaks with tradition and becomes a telegraph worker. In addition, there’s a whole host of characters to follow through the series as they tackle issues of sexual identity at a time when it was illegal to be gay; trying your best to better yourself in the face of peer pressure from gangs; the dangers of creating a false impression of who you are online; and female issues of body image and sexual inequality. And for eagle eyed readers, there’s a secret storyline hidden in the code.

The Thrill Electric is written by comic writing duo Leah Moore and John Reppion, designed by Manga aficionado Emma Vieceli, drawn by the Windflower team and produced by Tracy Beaker and Young Dracula’s Mia Jupp.

“When we discovered that the Telegraph system in the Nineteenth Century was to all intents and purposes a Victorian Internet, it really caught our imaginations,” says Leah Moore.  “A young woman could, with the right skills, join a predominantly male workforce and become part of the rapidly growing online international community.

“There is a strong resonance between the story in The Thrill Electric and the team helping to create it – lots of talented women working in a male dominated industry but rising to the surface despite that.”

The Thrill Electric tells its story in the form of an enhanced comic with layered panels and atmospheric animations and comes packed full of contextual issue-led information threaded throughout the story.

“Littleloud created the technical framework and animations, with a view to explore and push what comics can be in the digital age,” explains Darren Garrett, the agency’s Creative Director, “and how they can connect with new audiences. The technical framework we’ve built is all about exploring those possibilities and giving writers and artists tools to do this.”

Commissioning editor, Jo Twist, says, “After reading comics on the iPad, I really wanted us to transform the way you could read them online, and what the team have done is a joy to experience. This is the first use of Unity player in comics and the innovative way the narrative is combined with real historical fact, the illustration and the animations with contemporary music makes this something quite unique.”

• The Thrill Electric will be released weekly from 27th October 2011 and experienced via a bespoke comic reader available online at this address www.thethrillelectric.com and on iPod and iPhone devices.

Rex Royd Goes Digital On The Titan Comics App

Migrating from print to digital is Clint magazine’s other controversial star – Rex Royd.

Written by controversial comedian Frankie Boyle, Rex Royd is something which needs to be seen to be believed!

Personally I’m a little shocked it got past the Apple censors!

Exploding out of the pages of CLiNT, the trailblazing comics magazine from KICK-ASS creator Mark Millar and Titan magazines, Frankie Boyle’s twisted comic strip is now available for iPhone and iPad!

REX ROYD, by outspoken Scottish comedian and writer Frankie Boyle, introduces “The Renaissance Man of Madness” in a spectacular serialised comic. Drenched in the blackest of humour, Boyle weaves the barrier-shattering adventures of Rex Royd, a Lex Luthor-style super-scientist and businessman. Along with his close-knit support staff including Eve, the first woman, and his invincible head of security, Alan Black, Rex is out to change the world… whether we want him to or not!

Rex Royd comics by Frankie Boyle are now available to read on the iPhone and iPad. Search for the Titan Comics app in the app store or visit:
