Archaia Premieres ‘Rust Vol. 2’ & ‘Spera Vol. 2’ As Digital First Titles

ARCHAIA PREMIERES ‘RUST VOL. 2’ AND ‘SPERA VOL. 2’ AS DIGITAL FIRST TITLES

Sequels to two fan-favorite Archaia titles debut via comiXology

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 25, 2012) – Award-winning graphic novel publisher Archaia Entertainment continues its commitment to Digital First publication, releasing chapters from upcoming books in advance of the print edition through an exclusive partnership withcomiXology, the revolutionary digital comics platform with over 75 million comic downloads to date and a selection of more than 25,000 comics and graphic novels. Today, Archaia Entertainment and comiXology announce the debut of two, new, fan-favorite titles debuting digitally in advance of their hardcover collected print editions.

RUST VOL. 2: SECRETS OF THE CELL is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field, the debut graphic novel by Royden Lepp. In this volume, the dysfunctional Taylor family continues to rebuild their farm lives after the devastating loss of a recent war, and the appearance of the mysterious jet pack-wearing boy, Jet Jones.  Jet’s behavior continues to raise youngest brother Oswald’s suspicion, particularly when the appearance of another robot invader puts them all in danger! Like its predecessor, Rust Vol. 2 is presented in nostalgic sepia tone to help set the industrial atmosphere of the title. This volume is especially highly anticipated because of the recent announcement that director Joe Cornish (Attack of the Block) has been attached to the Rust film in development at 20th Century Fox. Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. SmithX-Men: First Class) is producing and Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is scripting.

SPERA VOL. 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed first volume of Spera, which is based off the original webcomic experiment created by Josh Tierney that brings illustrators together from around the globe to showcase their talents as some of the premier fantasy artists in the industry.  In this volume, exiled princesses Pira and Lono travel to the bustling city of Kotequog to avoid the clutches of Pira’s mother, the Evil Queen. Obtaining jobs as adventurers, the two best friends set out on a series of quests that land them in perhaps more excitement than they’d bargained for. Told in four chapters and a series of stand-alone shorts, each drawn by a different rising talent in comics, Spera Vol. 2 brings the same gorgeous artistry as its debut installment, featuring the works of Giannis Milonogiannis (Old City Blues), Kyla Vanderklugt (Flight), Timothy Weaver (Chivalrous), and Afu Chan (Spera Vol. 1).Spera will appeal to art lovers and children of all ages, especially fans of The Legend of Korra, Patricia Wrede’s Dealing with Dragons, Disney’s Tangled, and the Flight series.

The first chapters of RUST VOL. 2: SECRETS OF THE CELL and SPERA VOL. 2 debut digitally on comiXology on Wednesday, July 25, 2012available across iPhoneiPad,AndroidKindle Fire and the Web, with subsequent chapters releasing every month. The print editions will debut late Fall.

Comic Con 2012: Baboon Animation’s CIA Graphic Novel is Announced for iPhone

The award-winning interactive iPad graphic novel, CIA: Operation Ajax, will expand to iPhone and the iPod Touch, later this month, it was announced by producer Dan Burwen at a dedicated Comic Con panel today. “It was just an unbelievable honor to be a featured part of the interactive comics revolution at the this year’s Con,” said Emmy-nominated author Mike de Seve of Baboon Animation. “Ajax offers a brand new experience for fans of comics, spy stuff and cool secret history, and we’re thrilled fans saw it first in San Diego this year.

After debuting on the iPad a year ago, CIA: Operation Ajax has received much acclaim for its revolutionary approach to digital comics. De Seve and producer Daniel Burwen of publisher Cognito Comics pioneered a breakthrough method of storytelling last year by combining digital and gaming tools with the legacy of the printed page. The result is an unparalleled, interactive experience for the reader in the burgeoning tablet age.

At San Diego Comic Con, Burwen made the iPhone announcement during a colorful discussion of graphic novels, tablet storytelling and the inspiration for CIA: Operation Ajax, in his Sunday panel, “Reinventing the Graphic Novel for the iPad.” Burwen hosted a similar, popular SXSW panel on the same topic in March; watch the video here and get more information here.

Winner of the FWA Mobile of the Day Award on January 26, 2012, CIA: Operation Ajax was also recognized as an honoree at the 16th Annual Webby Awards, and was runner up for both the 2011 Best App Ever Awards and the 2012 CES Mobile Apps Showdown. This year, Flurry App Spotlight Awards also chose CIA: Operation Ajax as a finalist.

Dreamworks Feature Animation alum de Seve wrote the novel while working closely with The New York Times’ Stephen Kinzer, national bestselling author of “All the Shah’s Men.” De Seve’s script for CIA: Operation Ajax brings to the tablet the true-life spy thriller that was the the CIA’s first secret overthrow mission ever – in which the CIA and British SIS staged a revolution against Iran’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953. Combining subtle animation with a full film score, this 210-page true-life spy adventure unfolds in a groundbreaking reading experience.

Added de Seve: “Operation Ajax has already exceeded our expectations on the iPad, and we’re excited to launch it for a huge new audience on iPhone and iPod Touch.”

Packed with additional content, CIA: Operation Ajax also includes authentic declassified documents, twenty-two character dossiers, historical photos, and nine news reels from the era embedded right into the story. Starting today, fans will be able to enjoy this revolutionary graphic novel and interact with Eisenhower, Churchill, the Dulles brothers, Mossadegh, and the Shah right in their pocket.

CCI EXCLUSIVE: JManga to Launch Unlimited-Access Digital Manga Site – Comic Book Resources

The company behind the digital manga site JManga.com is working on plans to offer readers unlimited access, for a limited time, to individual chapters of a wide variety of new and older manga. The site, which has not yet been named, will launch with 20 titles. Access would be free, but for a subscription fee, users will be able to access material faster and possibly avoid ads.

JManga.com is run by a company known as JManga Co., Ltd., which is backed by the Digital Comics Association, a group of 39 Japanese publishers. The current site allows readers to purchase manga a volume at a time and read it online. At the JManga panel at Comic-Con International in San DIego, business manager Robert Newman announced that JManga will soon offer iOS and Android apps as well. Briggs’ Tarzan Reboot Goes Digital In Association With Burroughs Estate – Comic Book Resources

Official Press Release

Open Road Integrated Media, a digital publisher and multimedia content company, announced today that it will digitally publish Andy Briggs’s Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy and Tarzan: The Jungle Warrior in the US this fall in celebration of the centenary of Burroughs’s original Tarzan. The titles go on sale on October 16 and will also be available in print from Open Road on the same day.

Briggs said: “As a child, watching Tarzan on TV was pure escapism—an opportunity to be transported to mysterious Africa. A place that was a million miles from the drab city I lived in. Discovering there were twenty-six Tarzan books, written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, fueled my imagination further and inspired me to become a writer, creating exotic stories of high adventure. However, I never even dreamed that I would be able to take Tarzan’s reins and relaunch him for a whole new generation. But now, as we celebrate the iconic hero’s one hundredth birthday, I am doing exactly that: letting Tarzan live again for new fans and old warriors. Once again, we can all escape into the wild.”

Tim Travaglini, Director of Children’s Acquisitions at Open Road said: “Andy brings a tremendous amount of passion and excitement for Tarzan to every page of these novels and has recreated one of fiction’s greatest characters. We are excited to work with him to bring his twenty-first-century reboot to a new generation of digital readers.”

The ebooks will include an illustrated biography of Edgar Rice Burroughs and the history of Tarzan, and Open Road will produce marketing videos centered on Briggs and Tarzan that will be syndicated to content partners.

The Tarzan centennial will be celebrated at San Diego Comic-Con International (July 12–15, 2012), and featured on the cover of and inside the Comic-Con program guide received by more than 130,000 attendees, and on panels both yesterday and Saturday. Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., will host the Dum-Dum centennial celebration (August 15–19) in Tarzana, California, which will feature Jane Goodall as the guest of honor, author Andy Briggs, actors who have portrayed Tarzan on the screen, and a host of other guests.

Andy Briggs is a screenwriter, graphic novelist, and author. He has written for movies such as Judge Dredd and Freddy vs. Jason, as well asForeverman for Spider-Man creator Stan Lee and legendary producer Robert Evans.  Andy went on to work on Warner Bros.’Aquaman while simultaneously landing an eight-book deal with Oxford University Press for Hero.com and Villain.net. His graphic novels include Kong: King of Skull Island, Ritual, and Dinocorps.

Briggs joins Open Road’s growing catalog of young adult authors such as Jean Craighead George, Virginia Hamilton, Andrea J. Buchanan, Caroline B. Cooney, and Lois Duncan.

Title descriptions:

Escaping a dark secret, Robbie Canler joins an illegal logging team in the Congo jungle. Now they’re under siege from a sinister force. When the daughter of the camp’s boss, Jane Porter, goes missing, they assume bloodthirsty rebel soldiers have kidnapped her. In Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy, Robbie sets out on a rescue mission—unaware he is being watched . . . Are the rumors of a feral man raised by wild apes true? And if so, can the mysterious untamed savage be trusted to help them?

In Tarzan: The Jungle Warrior, a baby gorilla is snatched from its family by the world’s most infamous hunter, and Tarzan will stop at nothing to track him down. Meanwhile, Jane tries to learn more about Tarzan’s past, and must decide whether reuniting him with his lost Greystoke family is the right thing to do. But Robbie has ideas of his own. He has formed a plan that will get rid of Tarzan for good, and keep the secrets of his own past safe.
