The Wormworld Saga is an episodic graphic novel designed for tablets, from the mind of acclaimed illustrator Daniel Lieske. The Wormworld Saga app is the 4th comic book app produced by Robot Mediato be featured on Google Play/Android Market, after Robot 13The Adventures of Simon Pegg and Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little App.

Trailer: Ghostboy And The Nameless Grave

I’m a fan of Ghostboy, and what’s being done with the medium for the Kindle. I can’t wait to be able to get it on the Kindle in the UK and show my daughter!

Hopefully in time for Halloween!

In the meantime, here’s the trailer for the kindle title from Ghostboy and Robot Comics!

Robot Comics Wins!

Well done to Robot Comics in winning this award – I’m expecting big things from them this year!

Robot Comics’ Robot 13 app was awarded yesterday the Digital Innovation Award at Digital World Book New York.

Robot Comics was the only European company in competition, and the only company nominated twice when the longlist nominees were named for the Digital Book World Publishing Innovation Award.

Robot Comic’s Android and iPhone app Robot 13 – adapted from Blacklist Studios’ comic of the same name – was the winner in the Comics category. Other nominees in the same category included the Amazon Kindle bestseller Tumor,Disney’s Epic Mickey Digicomics, and the TallChair’s critically-acclaimedOperation: Ajax iPad app.

Robot 13 is no stranger to success. The Android version of the multi-platform app was previously featured by Google in the Android Market, reaching 200,000 downloads in a few weeks. It was the first comic book app featured by Google.

Created by Thomas Hall and Daniel Bradford, Robot 13 is an amnesiac robot who battles mythic monsters. Robot Comics brought Robot 13 to mobile devices using cross-platform software that combined frame-by-frame animation, transition effects, and vibration to create a unique reading experience.

“Daniel and I strive to make our comics as good and entertaining as possible. We are humbled by the attention Robot 13 has received and thankful to the Digital Book Awards for recognizing our efforts.”

–Thomas Hall, writer, Robot 13

“As Robot 13 is a labor of love, the Digital Book Awards is a true honor. It is exhilarating to see your creations come to life, especially in an exciting digital format. We are grateful for all those that helped along the way.”

–Daniel Bradford, artist, Robot 13

Released in early 2010, Robot 13 was one of the 200 apps that Robot Media produced the past year. “Mobile devices provide new storytelling possibilities where experience and content go hand in hand,” states Robot Media’s founder,Hermés Piqué. “Robot 13 was one of our first releases that explored this and our goal is to continue to explore it further. 2011 will be an exciting year for digital content!”

Mobile Comics Year In Review: Robot Comics

As we come towards the end of the year, I am going to be reflecting on the state of mobile comics and the changes we have had over the last twelve months. I will be looking at distributors, contributors and publishers.

Robot Comics‘s main strength comes from being one of the big distributors for comics on the Android platform, although they also release on Apple devices too! They also have comics on the DSi and Kindle, so in this they are unique.

With a different way of reading comics – for example, taking advantage of the vibration function on the iPhone – to releasing different comics such as Robot 13 and Ghostboy, Robot Comics are the indie publisher for mobile devices. They are in a unique position of having a large fan base for comics which are off the beaten track. They look at more individual comics and make them available for us to read, which is a good thing as far a variety. Their strong position in the android and Kindle market gives them a market strength yet untouched by other mobile publishers – but I foresee this may change soon.

Hopefully Robot Comics can continue to bring us hits, while continuing to work with such companies as Hukiau to bring forward more creators.

The Adventures of Simon Pegg – Coming Soon to your Mobile

Simon Pegg has a ‘bit’ of a geek history. We have the awesome Shaun of The Dead and his role in Star Trek. He is also the model for Hughie in The Boys!

Now he is staring in his own comic!

iPhone image

A hilarious and brilliantly crafted graphic novel featuring the escapades of Simon Pegg, a ruggedly handsome superhero (with a body a bit like Brad Pitt’s from Fight Club and an almost constant thirst for Coke Zero) and his ever faithful robotic manservant, Canterbury, as they fight to stop the world from exploding. Will they get to Hendon in time to stop evil criminal Lord Black from carrying out his plan to fire his ancient Egyptian laser beam into the sun? Will Simon finally capture the heart of flame haired French cat burglar, The Scarlet Panther? And, perhaps most importantly, will Canterbury manage to provide appropriate refreshments for all visiting guests/informants? There’s only one way to find out…

Created with Robot Media & Cornerstone the comic is to be available on the iPhone, iPad & Android from the 25th November for £1.79 its 68 pages and looks to be loaded with extras such as Twitter & Facebook – I’m looking forward to it!

Android: In Maps & Legends

Not content with being on the iPhone through Comixology and online through WOWIO, former Zuda hit In Maps & Legends is now available on the Android platform through Robot Comics:

In Maps & Legends won the Zuda Comics competition in November 2009, but its online serialization was interrupted with the close of the Zuda website.   Now creators Michael Jasper and Niki Smith have teamed with Robot Comics to release an exclusive Android edition.

In Maps & Legends is available now both as a free 8-page preview and $0.99 full-length Issue #1

Synopsis

Kaitlin Grayson considers herself just an artist until she gets recruited by a strange man named Bartamus, who shows up at her place in the middle of the night and demands she use her skills to save his dying world. Soon Kait gets caught between two realities, and if Bartamus’ world falls, Earth is next — along with untold others.

In Maps & Legends is a world-shattering fantasy with hints of sci-fi and steampunk, written by novelist Michael Jasper and illustrated by Niki Smith.

Hukilau helps digital comic submissions

Mobile Comic publisher Robot Comics have teamed up with Hukilau to distribute new comics over the mobile medium.

Robot Comics has officially partnered with Hukilau to offer a brand new opportunity for independent comic creators to create, fund, and distribute comics digitally on smartphones and tablets.

This is an unprecedented partnership allowing creators to fully control the production of their comic – from concept to funding to creation to distribution – while working with established mobile comic professionals to create the adaptation and apps.

Robot Comics joins of a larger coalition of companies that have teamed with Hukilau to offer a one-stop resource for digital distribution, transmedia marketing, studio services, agency representation, and the ability to showcase creator work to entertainment industry professionals.

This is another way for small creators to get their work out in the open. I will be interested to see the first submissions and how long the process will be!

Robot Comics: Armageddonquest on Android

Robot Comics have released Armageddonquest as a non-market comic for the Android as part of a Kickstarter project:

ARMAGEDDONQUEST squirms and thrashes in a crawlspace it dug out with its bare talons, partway between the early graphic novel and classic “outsider” art. It’s the comics version of the demon-haunted work of the young Daniel Johnston, raw, passionate, demented, electric.
–Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Crooked Little Vein)

Arm000cvr_finban

Robot Comics has released the first issue of Armageddonquest – a 900-page graphic novel opus by Ronald Russell Roach.

Armageddonquest is a non-market app because it’s being offered exclusively as part of a Kickstarter fundraiser to produce a limited edition single volume printing of the AQ graphic novel.

Readers interested in receiving the entire 20-chapter, 900-page saga for their Android device can visit the Armageddonquest Kickstarter Project for details.

Until I get a comic fan who owns an Android mobile (hint, hint) to assist me in my reviews and news about comics on the Android medium. I have to rely on other sites to give me news, reviews, previews and points of view.
Robot Comics are available on the iPhone so I do get a chance to use their technology – they have produced the likes of Robot 13 and Scott Pilgrim to read, among others. I do like their comic reader and I hope to see more from them as soon as possible.

KnowYourMobile.com have reviewed Robot Comics with a very in-depth technological and specification review and with some favourable information and opinions.

There’s a surprising amount of customisation available here. You can adjust the brightness of the application (a setting which is kept separate from your phone’s default brightness), pick different page transition animations and even alter your reading direction (essential when reading Japanese manga, as the novels are presented in right-to-left format, as opposed to the Western tradition of reading from left-to-right).

There’s also the opportunity to pick a custom set of controls, covering all of the available phone inputs from touch screen to keyboard
