Link: After Zuda, the War continues at comiXology

Its good to see another Zuda competitor making their way digitally – thanks to Robot6 @ CBR for this one!

A little more than a year ago, Matthew Petz saw his webcomic War of the Woods win Zuda’s monthly contest. A few months later, Zuda ended their monthly contests, then shut down the website and by the fall the imprint was shuttered by DC — all before Petz’s strip ever began its run on the site.

“A year ago this month I was trying to win the Zuda competition. I finally DID pull off the win…only to watch Zuda fold a few months later,” Petz told me last week. “That was kinda brutal.”

But the end of Zuda wouldn’t mean the end of the strip, as War of the Woods, like several other former Zuda strips, has found a new home on comiXology. But while some of the strips offered on Zuda are still being sold and branded under the Zuda imprint — and through the DC-branded application for the iPhone and iPad — Petz’s strip is now completely creator-owned.

Petz told me that when Zuda closed down, he was offered a percentage of what he would have earned on the contract he won last January, despite the fact that he hadn’t produced any work for them yet. “The people at DC I was dealing with and who I’ve since become friends with were (and still are) very supportive,” he said. “So in the end I got some money and more importantly, I was given my rights back. That was the biggest deal. I own War of the Woods 100 percent.”

Some of the contacts he made would help him make the jump from Zuda to comiXology. “The day I found out what was happening with Zuda, I got calls from everyone offering support and advice,” he said. “Friends like Bobby Timony, Kevin Colden and David Gallaher. It was David that did an email introduction with David Steinberger at ComiXology. Pretty soon after that I signed up to release WOTW through them. So far it’s been great. The comiXology team are easy to work with and are really supportive.”

And while he no longer has the backing of a large company like DC Comics behind his comic, he does have the lessons he learned from the initial contest.

“Obviously having someone like DC promoting you would be great, but at the same time no matter who you are you need to promote all you can.” Petz said. “That’s the biggest lesson I think I took from the competition. Promote , promote, promote. Interviews like this, podcasts, conventions and of course social media. Social media has the potential to really democratize things. You can’t afford not to embrace it.”

Described at War of the Worlds meets Wind and the Willows, the comic details how two otters, a father and his son, survive and fight back against an alien invasion. “We always see what it’s like for humans to survive in movies like Independence Day or War of the Worlds,” he told me last year when I interviewed him. “My thought when thinking was…I wonder how the animals are gonna deal with this?”

The first three chapters are available via comiXology’s website, as well as the apps they’ve developed for various platforms. Petz said he expects to have the fourth chapter up soon. He expects the first season to run about 60-75 pages, or about six issues, not including bonus material.

“When that’s done my plan is to try and find a print home for the book as well,” he said. “I heard that a lot at conventions last year, so fingers crossed. Beyond all that I have a pretty big outline that tells a big global story. I wrote the ending when I wrote the first eight pages, so I know how everything works out in the end.”

For further updates on War of the Woods, you can follow Petz on Twitter, or check out warofthewoodscomic.com.

Good Bye Zuda

Zuda have posted a final update and good bye as the imprint closes and all comes under the DC banner.

ZUDA COMICS went live in October 2007 after a bleary-eyed and exhausting 48-hour, non-stop, final development push. It was a moment of cautious pride initiating a brash experiment.

DC Comics had never done anything quite like ZUDA before; a mash-up of comics and social media, talent search and think tank. It had supporters, detractors, loyalists and cynics. Unfortunately, as a whole, ZUDA just never quite seemed to fit with DC Comics. Three years later it was time to close shop.

But something interesting happened along the way. Within that rag-tag assemblage there were a wealth of very specific achievements; how to manage editorially driven webcomics, how to structure online talent submissions, how to build a community from scratch, file size, format and aspect ratio specifications, storytelling techniques, web-to-print workflow…the list goes on.

Yes, ZUDA COMICS is over. The website and the imprint are gone.

However, that isn’t quite the end of the story.

We’re working with Jim Lee, John Rood and others on ways to take everything we’ve learned from ZUDA and combine it with new ideas for something that is, with a little luck, bigger and better. We”ll keep you up to date, work-in-progress style, as THE COLLECTIVE migrates from the “Official Blog of Zuda Comics” to “The Official Production Blog of DC Online.”

In the meantime we’re also going to continue to release the remaining series through our current digital publishing outlets – comiXology and Sony. Please support those guys with as much passion in those new outlets as you did when they were on the site. They’ve earned it.

Finally, thanks to all of the creators, contributors and fans – ZUDA COMICS would literally not have been possible without you.

Cheers!

No news from Zuda, as to what their releases will be yet!

In Maps and Legends: Online, WOWIO and more?

Former Zuda winner ‘In Maps & Legends’ was cut off in its run when the site shut down to concentrate on mobile comics. Well the winner is still out their and available to read. The following is from Robot 6 @ CBR

All the details are here, but briefly, the comic will be available as a downloadable PDF from several distributors as well as on Kindle, and a dedicated website will go live on Sept. 1.

They are currently negotiating with ComiXology, Robot Comics (distributors for Droid phones), Graphic.ly, and Wowio, which covers a lot of bases. It sounds like a complicated process, but good for them for making their comic available on every possible platform—it will be interesting to see which one works the best for them.

I can confirm that the graphic novel is now available from WOWIO on their website:

Kait considers herself just an artist until she gets recruited by a strange man named Bartamus, who shows up at her place and demands she use her skills to save his dying world.

Soon she’s caught between two worlds, and if Bartamus’ world falls, Earth is next — along with untold other worlds.

IN MAPS & LEGENDS 1 launches a digital comic that mixes together urban fantasy, science fiction, & steampunk. This debut issue features art by Niki Smith and story by Michael Jasper, and further episodes are coming soon.

Comixology: Red Sonja, Deadpool & Green Arrow

As well as the two Green Arrow series, Comixology have released the first 7 issues of the ongoing Deadpool series – including his influential run in ‘Secret Invasion’.
Dynamite have released issues 0-2 of their Red Sonja series – I have never read a Red Sonja comic, although I know the character, so I may give this one a go!
Comixology have also released many latest issues of ongoing series – including Irredeemable, Planetary, Justice League: Generation Lost and Witchblade!

Green ARrow

Preview: The Hammer

Zuda Comics have released a promo for their new release from Comixology - The Hammer…

hammer_launch_promo

Now I’m assuming that this is going to be another free #1 from Zuda and I applaud the idea – the more we can get the comic medium out to everyone, the better! I never read The Hammer, but I’m sure I will be commenting on in the coming days!

Hammertime is nigh. Tomorrow, to be totally accurate. Indulge your desires for violent, rabbit-shaped brutality! I know am. THE HAMMER #1 will be available at Comixology tomorrow, August 25 2010 AD. It will cost approximately $0.00 USD. Thanks be to Sam Little for sending us this promo. Praise be to Gabe Ostley (pencils), Rob Berry (inks) and Steve Steiner(colors). Also, to Comixology. We like you.

Spotlight: Street Code #1

Street Code #1 is available free from Zuda on the DC and Comixology apps.

This isn’t usually my type of comic. The art is passible and the subject is ok. But I found myself swiping through the panels totally engrossed!
A Semi-autobiography in style, I don’t usually enjoy – maybe it’s because I’m getting older! This is worth checking out, but it may be a matter of taste for others, so no real judgement here!
