IDW Publishing, also known as Idea + Design Works, LLC and IDW, is an American comic book company. The company was founded in 1999 and has been awarded the title “Publisher of the Year Under 5% Market Share” for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006 by Diamond Comic Distributors.
IDW is currently recognized as the fifth largest publisher of American comic books by Diamond Comic Distributors.
The company was initially known for horror comics such as 30 Days of Night, Dark Days and numerous others. Some well-known writers and artists of horror comics, including Ashley Wood, Ben Templesmith and Steve Niles, have done work for IDW. The company now also specializes in licensed properties, acquiring the rights to 24, Angel, CSI, Transformers, Star Trek, Dick Tracy, Doctor Who and G.I. Joe.
IDW have been making great strides in the digital market. With strong brands such as GI: Joe, Dr Who, Transformers and True Blood, IDW have added other excellent titles like Kill Shakespeare and Mystery Society.
Starting out on the early Comixology app, IDW then added their comics to the iVerse Comics app (which is now known as Comics+). Soon IDW produced their own app using the iVerse engine:
As well as being able to read IDW’s titles on this app, IDW produced seperate apps for their best selling brands – these include Transformers, Star Trek, True Blood and Doctor Who This allowed readers to update subscriptions and concentrate on these titles.
IDW comics are also available on the PSP Comics Network allowing further distribution of their titles.
Not content with this IDW decided to further distribute their titles across more platforms:
Following this IDW have recently announced that a range of their graphic novels will also be available on the iPad increasing the market share of the company.
IDW have shown the way forward as far as mobile comics publishers are concerned and I expect things to move forward in 2011.
