‘Tron: Legacy’: The Motion Comics Treatment

The New York Times Blog has news on Tron: Legacy having its own motion comic there is a video trailer of the motion comics, which can’t be embedded I’m afraid – so you can see the trailer here

With the highly anticipated release of “Tron: Legacy” on Friday the question arises of how to pass on to a new generation the fan enthusiasm that made the original 1982 “Tron” movie a cult favorite.

Disney and its collaborator, Double Barrel Motion Labs, have come up with a solution: adapting “Tron: Legacy” into a motion comic that will be sold through the iTunes app store.

A flick of the finger on the screen of an iPhone or iPad moves the comic panels from left to right, guiding the viewer through the stark lighting and harsh blacks that are synonymous with the “Tron” universe.

Jeff Krelitz, chief executive of Double Barrel Motion Labs, who also served as director of animation on the project, explained that the motion comic was a “straight adaptation” of the film but skewed slightly to appeal to children under the age of 8.

“What you see will be an animated, younger version of the film with the actual voice track that goes into the animation,” he said.

Founded in 2008, Double Barrel, with offices in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore., started small, with projects that required animating simply one image, like a movie poster or album cover. But the company quickly expanded its scope by working with major media companies to bring their properties to life with the storytelling possibilities of motion comics.

Mr. Krelitz said his inspiration for motion comics did not come from the original “Tron” movie but from another popular film released in the 1980s. “When I saw the movie ‘Big,’ they talk about the ultimate dream of a comic book come to life,” he said.  ”It becomes a living extension of the source material.”

To make the experience complete the audio track includes an original musical score in addition to the Daft Punk theme from the movie. Because it is never too early to introduce kids to Daft Punk.
