New CTO prepares digital comics leader for next phase of growth globally
September 9th, 2013 – New York, NY – On the cusp of surpassing 200 million comic and graphic novel downloads, comiXology has named Jeff DiBartolomeo its Chief Technology Officer (CTO). DiBartolomeo previously served in senior technology roles for HBO’s HBO GO® and Volume.com units. As comiXology’s CTO, DiBartolomeo oversees digital innovation and data management and delivery for the leading global cloud-based digital comics platform.
“Jeff is accustomed to working in fast-moving digital content environments and brings the technology skill set, energy and management expertise to deliver comiXology’s more than 40,000 digital comics to an ever-expanding audience worldwide,” said comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “The market potential for comics and graphic novels is massive with a constant flow of comic content from both established publishers and independent creators and the continued proliferation of mobile and other digital platforms globally.”
Near-term, DiBartolomeo and his team are preparing comiXology for the iOS 7 platform that’s expected to rollout this fall. Other priorities include a deepened focus on comiXology’s reading and shopping experience, including personalizing that experience with a robust recommendations engine, and expanding international access.
Before joining comiXology, DiBartolomeo spent more than a decade at HBO where, as SVP of Consumer Technology, he was one of the three founders of the industry-leading HBO GO service and led the technology team responsible for building and operating the service, along with HBO’s other multiplatform services: MAX GO, HBO.com, and Cinemax.com. Prior to joining HBO, Jeff was CTO of the urban Internet portal Volume.com, a wholly owned subsidiary of HBO. Jeff began his career at Time Inc.’s Pathfinder before moving into the interactive agency space working for Agency.com, among others.
“The digital delivery and reading of comics is on the cusp of going truly mass-market in the US and globally,” commented DiBartolomeo. “I’m passionate about building a world-class technology infrastructure and leveraging the newest digital tools and platforms to support comiXology’s growth and enhance the digital experience for our readers.”
DiBartolomeo is the newest addition to an expanded, seasoned management team at comiXology. Earlier this year, comiXology appointed Michael Frankel as Chief Financial Officer, Samantha Saturn as Chief Marketing Officer, Anshu Dua as Senior Vice President of Business Development and Brad Sonnenberg as General Counsel. “We’re committed to hiring, and have been successful attracting, the very best talent to advance comiXology strategically and operationally, supporting our rapid growth and serving comics readers worldwide,” comiXology CEO Steinberger said.
