Reviews: Dirk Gently, Casey & April, Ragnarok & Sherlock Holmes

Reviews of some of this weeks digital comics from IDW Publishing

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #3

The reborn Egyptians keep walking, the Copycat Killers keep killing, and the museum gala where these and other seemingly random events will converge looms large!

Everything starts to link up here – with the Egyptians sucking the life force from people – we also get some of the background behind them and who may also be a problem for Dirk. We also get more of an understanding about the mysterious phones (soul powered!) as well as a stand off with the married couple serial killers! This continues to be a fun, cringe-worthy detective story and everything is coming together!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey & April #3

Casey and April are separated and both must face the Rat King’s maze alone. Clues to the Pantheon await just out of reach, but Casey and April may not be able to find them if they cannot find each other.

This is a particularly touching cover, and it rounds up this and the last few issues of this mini series. Linking well to the main series, it continues to be a good read away from being lost in the shuffle of all the other characters. Casey and April are lost in a labyrinth – and the Rat King seems to be at the center. We see his plans and glimpses of what he up to. A great reunion happens here too!

Ragnarok #6

Bring Out Your Dead. Thor has arrived at last in Asgard. The devastation is complete, as the Thunder God searches the ruins of his home for the remains of those nearest and dearest to him. He finds not only the broken heart of his worst fears, but a secret hidden since before the final battle of the gods and their enemies, a secret that reveals the deep and devious wisdom of Father Odin, and the goodwill of a red squirrel.

This issue completes the arc with Thor returning to Asgard. Things do not go too well for him there as he discovers the fallen gods before Ragnarok. There is an excellent fight scene here, as well as look closer at the Dark Elves and the role they will play in this series. I’m really enjoying the old epic style of this story. Thor continues to grow and we learn as he does of this new world!

Sherlock Holmes: The Seven-Per-Cent Solution #1

The best-selling Sherlock Holmes novel by writer/director Nicholas Meyer comes to comics! The real story behind Sherlock Holmes’ final confrontation with Professor Moriarty is at long last revealed! Who is the real Moriarty? Why did Holmes disappear for so long? The game is afoot!

This new series gives us a new ‘unknown’ story behind the Sherlock Holmes mythos. Narrated by an aging Watson we get a new look at Holmes – at points only hinted at in the official history. The art is gritty and suits the story well, as does the way the characters are shown. It’s and interesting story, which looks to evolve as we go on. This is not only a Holmes story, but one on how his action affect those around him!
