Reviews: Belle: Beast Hunter, Dance Of The Dead, Grimm Tales Of Terror & The Musketeers

Some thought on four of this weeks comics from Zenescope Entertainment – including new series The Musketeers

Belle: Beast Hunter #2

The Grimm Universe is filled with heroes far and wide dealing with all kinds of threats, from vampires and werewolves to corrupt government organizations and ancient orders battling for control of the realms of power. But what lies in the deepest corners of our world could give the evilest creature nightmares. A threat since the beginning of time is rising, and only one person will be there to stop it from destroying everything. Introducing the newest ally in the war of monsters: Belle the Beast Hunter!

There is a lot of water-based action in this issue, which is pretty bombastic, as well as have some really well paced scenes. Then the action comes to a screeching halt, with a rescue? (maybe) and a pretty grizzly dream sequence. I like how the mystery of this long lived, legacy hero is unfolding, with a good mix of action and also some nice character moments.

We have obviously got a lot to learn from this story, with some nice well told story parts – giving us hints to something to come, but not all of it. We get some more mystery at the end, and some more questions to ask, but things seem a little quieter….

Dance Of the Dead #4

The Shadowlands were bad enough, but now Mystere and Jasmine find themselves trapped inside the mysterious Tower, lost in an endless maze filled with deadly creatures. They have no choice but to trust Bakar to guide them through the labyrinth, even though they suspect he has his own sinister agenda. But the truth behind his scheme is even more deadly than either of them could imagine.

Jasmine, Mystere, and Bakur find their way to the tower to find their way out of the Shadowlands, but things are not all as they seem!

Along with the mystery of Bakur – we find out more about him as we move on with some well told flashbacks, but there is also the twisty-turny tower to deal with. There is magic in the air and in the tower and Jasmine is starting to discover her link between the tower and her – but will it be too late?

Mystere is having troubles of her own, with her power and this land threatening to overpower her – I can’t help but think that this may be a good thing though.

Things look like they are going to get worse, but we’ve got two issues left….

Grimm Tales Of Terror Volume 3 #12

Wax Museum As humans we are driven to create for the world, but what happens when your creations come back to haunt you? Sometimes letting go isn’t a choice in the matter and we are left to deal with the terrifying consequences. Be sure to check out this new frightening tale of both loss and love, and the horror that it can bring!

An interesting GToT this month, with a monster created more from grief than anger – which is different to most of the ‘created a monster’ tropes. It was well told and I liked the build up towards the end, although there wasn’t so much of a twist in this one as in others. The ending – the final panel – could be seen as one though.

The artwork made it pretty creepy, with some nice touches – the blood, the smiles and the actions.

A good addition!

The Musketeers #1

A group of super-powered beings calling themselves the Musketeers has emerged in Philadelphia. While their hearts may be in the right place, their methods are questionable—blurring the line between hero and villain—especially in the eyes of the police force, who would rather see them locked away for good!

A new five-part mini series from Zenescope with some anti-heroes…

It seems though that their hearts are true, and they may have some problems between them, but this looks to be an interesting mioni-series with links to the Grimm Fairy Tales universe and maybe Tarot as a whole?

I actually am more interested in the villains, who are not clear throughout, but by the end hey are and we get some good villainy going on!
