Reviews – Dick Tracy: Dead Or Alive & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Some thoughts on two of the latest digital comics from IDW Publishing – Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #91

Dick Tracy: Dead Or Alive #4

The pop art event of 2018 continues! With Tess Trueheart by his side, Dick Tracy faces a final showdown with Yesterday Knewes in this shocking conclusion to Dead or Alive! Bear witness to the iconic comic-strip hero reimagined in the 21st century through a retro lens by the superstar team of Michael Allred, Lee Allred, Rich Tommaso, and Laura Allred! Cover art and co-written by Eisner-winning superstar Michael Allred (Madman, iZombie, Silver Surfer, Batman ’66)! Illustrated by Rich Tommaso (Spy Seal, Dry County) with Michael Allred inks!

The final part of this retro mini series (before the next one) and it all gets wrapped up nicely. Tracy gets some help from an old ‘associate’ and the leads to some fun banter between the two about times past. From there, the rest of the story is well told, and fast fast paced.
We get a few dramatic reveals, as well as some shoot-outs. All nicely done, until we get the rooftop battle. It doesn’t finish they way most of them do, but I like the way the ending was all sorted out.
I don’t know if the end of this mini series is going to lead into the new series, but it will be interesting to see where it all goes.
A good, well rounded issue, and a fun series to read.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #91

Karai returns to New York City and means business! Will she come to Splinter and the TMNT seeking peace? or war? A pivotal turning point!

Tom Waltz – Writer
Michael Dialynas – Artist, Cover Artist
Karl Moline – Variant Cover Artist
Kevin Eastman – Variant Cover Artist

Tense.
That is how I would describe this issue. The return, last issue, of Karai make the reading of this on edge. You just are waiting for the shoe to drop. How will Splinter react? Even after the excellent Leonardo story from the Macro Series, it’s still a difficult decision. It also seems that Karai’s grandmother is causing trouble – that can be difficult! Add in the hotheads from both sides (Raph!!!) and there is a keg ready to explode….
Until the end!
Meanwhile there is some interesting bonding with Casey and Jenny – as they find out a bit about each other’s past!
Metalhead also adds in a little difference here with an interesting talk with Agent Bishop. I’m sure there will be more stirring before we get to #100!
