Advance Review: ‘Return’ From Markosia

Arriving at the end of the month, Return is a new graphic novel from Markosia.

Created and written by Tom Steephen, with art by Kevin Low and edits by Jerry Hinds, ‘Return’ tells the tale of Sayana, a young heiress who experiences a disturbing and recurring dream where she sees herself as an Indian Princess of old that suffers from a devastating turn of events, experiencing violence, death and love.

I often say about comics coming with history. Well, Return makes its own history. With flashbacks to a previous life, Sayana is taken on a quest around the world to discover what has happened in her past life.

There is some excellent building here, as we get parts of the story handed to us. These dreams of a past life can and may lead you down different paths, and this story shows this really well. The flicks between the ‘now’ and the ‘then’ are well done, and each time we see something new.

There is a whole host of characters, both from the past and from the present, as we race across Asia and India.

I like the character builds in this too. There are some good moments that show what the characters are all about, and what drives them. Sayana is an interesting character. She comes from a form of royalty, and she knows she has fallen on her feet. Nevertheless, these dreams are troubling her, and she needs to get to the bottom of it all.

We get taken up the mountains, in villages and into shady parts of town. This gives us an excellent combination of storytelling and action.

The action moves well, and there are some well laid out parts here – especially towards the closing moments of the story.

I really enjoyed the art. The scene with the tigers was especially good, with some wild expressions. This, combined with the colouring works really well and there is a good sense of the characters, their emotions and what they are doing.

Return is a unique story, with an excellent idea behind it. There is some potential scope for more from this, and I like the way it leads you around with the characters.
