Review: Grimm Fairy Tales #49

From Zenescope Entertainment, Grimm Fairy Tales #49 features the continuing search for Shang and the secrets behind the Dark Book.

Taking over after the death of her mother, Sela, Skye Mathers is the new Guardian of the Nexus. With the help of Shang, her mentor, she is learning the extent of her new powers and trying to figure out the mystery of her connection to the book of Fairy Tales. Skye’s Odyssey is completed, but her journey is far from over. Now, with the location of Shang literally at her fingertips, she must explore the darkest corners of the Grimm Universe and discover the secrets of the mysterious book in her possession.

Writer: Dave Franchini
Artwork: Julius Abrera & Moy R.

We’re getting close to the end of this quest. Shang and what is behind the Dark Book is within touching distance and we get some glimpses here.

We discover who is behind the Dark Book, but before that we get some good action and character moments. The character moments come first with Skye and the others having a little fun (and potentially pizza) until the action starts.

The action starts in a good way, showing us who (or possibly what) has been stalking Skye in previous issues. This dark person has a good fight with Skye, and holds their own, but Skye’s strength comes from within and a good place.

This takes us into the Dark Book, where we get a big reveal. It’s something we may have suspected from previous issues, and we don’t have the ‘whys’ yet, but it works well. The power is there, and it leaves Skye in an interesting (and familiar place)

The art is well done, although the change in the art during the book section is a little jarring. I like the colouring and there are some interesting choices here.

We’re close – very close!
