Review: The Magic Order 2 #2

Out this week from Image Comics, it’s the second issue of this second volume – this is The Magic Order 2 #2.

The next chapter in MARK MILLAR’s critically acclaimed THE MAGIC ORDER series takes the Moonstone family to England where Kevin Mitchell, the leader of the London chapter, is under attack by dark forces living in the world’s underbelly. The Magic Order made all the monsters disappear five hundred years ago, but now they’ve had enough—and they want to rule the world again.

After issue #1’s revelations, this issue ramps up the threat.

It does an admiral job of not only giving us a lot more on the forces who are ranging against the magic order. Their powers, motivations, and especially how far they are willing to go to attack and get what they want. It’s an interesting setup, with some good uses of magic and how they do what they want. These are some very dark characters.

On the other side, within the Magic Order, we get introduced to some new allies in London. And there are more magical beings to learn about. With some history hinted at too.

The new characters on both sides slot very nicely into the story and the world we are exploring – I particularly like the end of the issue, where we discover a secret to one of the characters.

The threat itself is interesting and I like the quest that must be taken to get all of the parts. There are some good ideas here, and the breaking of the item is well done, and means we get to spread across the world and see more of the magic.

This is a good second issue and has some great points and ideas. I really enjoy the art and there is a good excuse for some magic, some wide and close action shots, as well as devastation. There are some well done, gruesome, scenes and they are particularly striking.
