Review – Van Helsing: Return of the League of Monsters #2

The second and final part of this story, with a lot to take in from Zenescope Entertainment – this is Van Helsing: Return of the League of Monsters #2.

Liesel Van Helsing has protected the nights from vampires, werewolves, and creatures beyond nightmares for years. But recently, several of her deadliest foes joined forces to take their revenge and break her spirit by killing the man she loves and taking his soul. Led by Dracula’s Daughter Charlotte, this “League of Monsters” succeeded in their plan, but were betrayed and banished to the Underworld by their erstwhile benefactor–a being they believe to be Hades. Now Liesel must team up with the very creatures who wanted her dead in order to save her love–but is it already too late for all of them?

Increasing the size of this second part of the series is an excellent idea. These larger sized issues are beginning to become a good standard from Zenescope and allow a lot more storytelling to be told. By no means there is decompression, as the action – in this issue at least – is ongoing, and there is a lot to take in.

It may seem a while since we had the first part to this, but this issue answers many questions and closes off some loops of stories.

Van Helsing is in a bind. Having to rely on former enemies to get into hell to rescue her boyfriend. That just about covers it, from there it is a fast-moving issue, with a lot of action and storytelling on the way. We also get to the bottom of the return of her ex-boyfriend, and all that entails. That was an interesting twist, and the outcomes of that worked really well.

This issue ties everything off well for Van Helsing to move on – there is the battles against and with enemies, and I’m sure that some of those will come back to haunt her, but this is a good closure of the story. The artwork works out well, with some well drawn scenes and some good variety in the style.
