Dark Horse Tuesday Hunt: 31st May 2011

Dark Horse have their latest Tuesday hunt for a free comic on – and I have a clue!

Read on for details and the clue is at the bottom!

We have hidden a promotional code on a comic book profile page within the Dark Horse Digital store. This code will be available for anyone who finds it and can be used during the checkout process to get the comic that the code is linked to, for FREE!

A different code will be available next Tuesday also, and good for that day only.

We will release clues about where the codes are located on our Facebook Page corresponding to each day’s Hidden Code.

Here’s how it works:

1. Find the Comic Profile with the hidden Comic Code on the Dark Horse Digital store
2. Write down the Code
3. Put Associated Comic in your Purchase Cart
4. At Checkout, input the Promo Code you found.
5. That comic will now be free!

As an example: We might hide a Promotional Code in the comic profile for Umbrella Academy #1 – That Code will be for a Free copy of Guild #1. Copy the code, find Guild #1 and put it in your purchase cart. When you go to check out, use the promotional code to get the Guild #1 for free. Easy as that!
Last week people found a code for a Usagi Yojimbo comic in our Guild comic profiles in the digital store.

Have fun looking around the Digital Store!

Please note: This promotion code is only good in the Dark Horse Digital Web Store. The App cannot handle Promo codes.

And for those who need a little more help the clue is:

Hellboy prefers Maryland over Prague.

Graphic.Ly: The Darkness for $0.99

The Darkness #1 is available for free on Graphic.Ly, but you can get issues #2 – #6 for $0.99 each from Graphic.Ly. This is an excellent series, and worth reading with a creative team of Garth Ennis and Marc Silvestri!

Breaking News! Post Flashpoint DC Goes Day and Date Digital!

This is a massive move for DC Comics and will have repercussions across the publishing world!

This year, change is in the air at DC Comics.

On Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics will launch a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues, including the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee. The publication of JUSTICE LEAGUE issue 1 will launch day-and-date digital publishing for all these ongoing titles, making DC Comics the first of the two major American publishers to release all of its superhero comic book titles digitally the same day as in print.

DC Comics will only publish two comic books on August 31st: the final issue of this summer’s comic book mini-series FLASHPOINT and the first issue of JUSTICE LEAGUE by Johns and Lee, two of the most distinguished and popular contemporary comic book creators, who will be collaborating for the first time. Together they will offer a contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry’s premier superhero team.

In the hours, days and weeks to come, we’ll have more news about the other titles. Tomorrow, we’ll hear from Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about this momentous occasion. Keep checking THE SOURCE for updates about the other first issues.

This year, make history with us.

The Thrill Electric

Due out in the Autumn, this is a motion comic I am really looking forward to!

From Leah Moore and John Reppion, I forsee some great things to come from this!

The story revolves around the office of the International and Electric Telegraph Company in Manchester, in 1871. We follow the fortunes of a gang of young adults who connect with wires. They have the day to day data of the city, of the world even, flowing through their telegraph keys. They are solely responsible for the safe transmission of millions of messages from Croydon to Calcutta, Cairo to Copenhagen, millions of bits of information flowing through the wires, through their fingers. Millions of people relying on the telegraph for news of wars, the prices of their stocks, the news of a loved one’s birth, or marriage or death. All of this responsibility heaped on those young shoulders and they still manage to find time to slack off, play games, bitch about each other and fall madly passionately in love, all at the lightning  speed of the telegraph.

The Thrill Electric revisits a generation who were at the cutting edge of technology, who had skills which took them to a whole new level, and created a whole new class of young affluent workers. men and women were working side by side often for the first time, trying to outclass one another with their telegraph skills. Feathers were ruffled, and the tension, well you could say it was electric!

I quite enjoy motion comics – Warren Ellis run on Iron Man was very enjoyable and I’ve even got The Watchmen one too!

Searching For Comics In iTunes

Searching for comics has got easier!

Digital products available through in-app purchases (the primary way comics are sold on the iOS platform) will now be included in search results on iTunes. The expansion of search in iTunes means that searches for comic properties, including those searches stimulated by movies, TV, or videogames, will now bring up the major digital comic-selling apps. This will expose more consumers to comic products than has been the case in the past, when only the app itself, not what was sold in it, came up in searches.

Skullkickers: Jim Zubkavich Talks to Comixology

Skullkickers creator had an interview with Comixology and has some thoughts on the creative process for digital:

comiXology: With the sixth and final issue out on comiXology this week, what has your experience working on the digital front been like?

Jim Zubkavich: It’s not our final issue! Don’t leave us yet! Believe me, we have more adventures to tell. Although Skullkickers was originally announced as a mini-series, we’ve been given the go ahead by Image for more monster mashy goodness and I assure you that we’re hard at work on the second story arc, which will be arriving late May/early June.

Having an easily accessible digital version of the book is wonderfully flexible. Having a free zero issue available to as a way to bring readers in the door and get them used to the Skullkickers style has been invaluable too.

Misty’s moody color palettes look fantastic, with bright magic effects and lush environments really popping well on screen.

Probably my favorite aspect of the digital issues has been playing with the formatting options that are possible. In our third issue there was a four page spread of the dwarf hallucinating that we had to split into two double spreads for the printed book. In the digital version it’s just one giant panoramic view that pulls in the reader that much more; Very satisfying and engaging.
