Review: Eldritch! #3

Now this is a story!

Hitting the ground running with an excellent head-destroying sequence (!) and some science/magic/biology half way through we are getting all we want in this excellent issue!

Anya Sobczek is locked in a Chamber of Horrors. A surgical table. Rusty scalpels. A tank of roiling black blood, dozens of mean-looking machines, and the hissing head of Medusa herself. CLACK – the door opens, and Anya the Unbeliever gets ready to start a war… STRIKE A BLOW FOR SCIENCE in the new chapter of ELDRITCH!

By this point in the story, Eldritch! ran the risk of becoming too slow for people to keep up with, but the team behind it stepped up and have delivered us an excellent issue which is the best by far.

Story, art, layout and lettering all fit nicely into place here with some excellent scenes and pacing behind them. The layouts for the research part of the issue doesn’t break up the flow of the title and fits right into the theme of that part of the story.

There is some wonderful dialogue here which goes extremely well with the vibrant art which is all over the place (in a good way!) in this series.

Racing off into danger is the place where I want to be – at the beginning of the next issue – I can’t wait!

About ELDRITCH!:

ELDRITCH! Shocked Back to Life!
ANYA SOBCZEK is a snarling science major with an arm full of Darwin tattoos. Her brother OWEN is a sensitive young thing in a coven of teenage occultists. The Sobczek sibs have always been brutally competitive, but now that Owen’s blood has started BUBBLING with ancient tentacled abominations, their rivalry’s about to enter a vast new dimension of cosmic terror…
2010: Artists Drew Rausch and Aaron Alexovich hurled their infectious horror/comedy hybrid ELDRITCH! into blazing combat in DC Comics’ final Zuda webcomic competition. After several centuries it emerged, dazed and confused, with the word WINNER indelibly etched on its forehead.
It was promptly buried in an unmarked grave.
June 2011, ELDRITCH! is shocked back to life.

THESE lucky few survived it’s TERROR and have already offered their prayers to the ELDRITCH! king:

“The first thing I did upon reading just the first page of ELDRITCH! was throw the book into the fireplace, terrified that the comic was so good it might just stop my heart. Long did I clutch at my chest before ordering the book once more. I recommend buying several copies at once.” – JHONEN VASQUEZ (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, I Feel Sick)

“Crazy, dark and fun. Look forward to more!” – GABRIEL HARDMAN (Hulk, Heathentown)

“One of my favorite comics!” – MARK WAID (Daredevil, Irredeemable)

“KINETICALLY NEUROTIC!” – Valerie D’Orazio, MTV GEEK
