From Zenescope Entertainment is a new series this week – Rise of the Djinn #1.
Things couldn’t be worse for Tamara Brazile. A highly decorated and venerable police detective with almost fifteen years of experience on the job, her world comes crashing down around her when her husband is murdered at the hands of a serial killer she had been pursuing. And to make matters worse, she is diagnosed with Stage IV for breast cancer before she has a chance to bring the killer to justice. But as fate would have it, she is given a second chance at life when she discovers that she is a descendant of an ancient race of DJINN (genies), with the power to cure herself and others. However, there is a catch: She can only keep the power so long as she aids a pair of evil djinn bring an ancient djinn named Arghan back to life to aid them in a coming war amongst the other djinn of the world. A war which could usher in an age of misery and strife for mankind.

Outside of the main stories of Zenescope, this gives us a quick tease at the beginning of what to expect. The tease works well as there are hints throughout about the nature of this adventure.
After that initial introduction, we get a good look at our leading character. A police officer who is pretty determined. This aspect moves the story on well as she is hunting a serial killer. This hunt leads her and her team to a dangerous place, which has a massive cost to her.
This part is well done, and acts as a nice piece of bait to the story – it drives us on and adds some interesting aspects to what we have moving forward. She has her own personal problems too.
As we move on the more mystical aspects open up, and there is a hunt for old relics that link to the serial killer. That all ends in an explosive manner and works well too. Finally, we get a good cliffhanger as Tamara’s powers manifest.
We don’t have all the answers yet, but that is something for the later issues. In all, this is a good start to this new story, with a lot of character moments, and action.
The art works well here – showing equal ranges of emotional aspects, the action and the mystical.
