Review: Download #1

From Red 5 Comics is a new series this week – Download #1

When Eric is hit by a mysterious blast of light from space, he suddenly finds his mind filled with designs for strange devices.  But when he blindly begins building them, he won’t discover what they do until he and his friends turn them on.  But do they dare?  In the spirit of The Goonies and Explorers, the adventure begins here from the creators of Haunted and Riptide!

(W) Scott Chitwood (A) Danny Luckert

There are some interesting levels of mystery in this new series from Red 5 Comics. It starts right from the off, with a cave, and some interesting cave paintings. This gives us an idea of how far back this mystery goes.

After a very neat transition – both in terms of the story and artistically – we meet the main characters and their motivations. In a few smart panels, we get some good background of the kids, and their family lives. It is well done, and with some nice touches of humour.

Then the ‘event’ happens.

This adds to the mystery as we don’t know what it really is, where it comes from, and what it wants to do – but there are some good up-to-date comments here (the ‘rona) and an interesting hospital trip where things start to ramp up.

From there this issue is pretty fast-paced until the final pages, as things run amok. We don’t know why, or what they are going to do, but the kids reactions to this device causing havoc is fun to read.

We finish off to close to where we started, the beginnings of a conspiracy – a nice hook to get us into future issues.

Art-wise, this is a well laid out story, with some excellent scenes and some good fun in the more fantastic items. The characters are well done, and there are some good moments.

I enjoyed this and want to find out more.
