Review – Myths & Legends Quarterly: Jasmine

A new large-sized issue from Zenescope. This is Myths & Legends Quarterly: Jasmine.

The war raging in the shadows of the Grimm Universe leaves no one unaffected, including ex-genie and fire-dagger wielding heroine, Jasmine. She was on the front lines of the initial attack and hasn’t been seen since that first strike. Lost and separated from her friends, she finds herself back inside the last place she ever wanted to be, the world within her lamp! Now, Jasmine must embark on an epic mystical journey to escape the prison she finds herself in, but what secrets will she uncover about her past along the way, and what answers do they hold for her future–and the future of the Grimm Universe?

STORY – DAVE FRANCHINI, DAVID WOHL & JENNA LYN WRIGHT
WRITER – JENNA LYN WRIGHT
ARTWORK – HAKAN AYDIN, JUAN FRANCISCO MOTA, RENATO REI & ALESSANDRO UEZU
COLORS – MAXFLAN ARAUJO & GROSTIETA
LETTERS – TAYLOR ESPOSITO OF GHOST GLYPH STUDIOS

This was an interesting read. Removed from the Grimm Fairy Tales universe, Jasmine finds herself alone in a desert. This harkens back to her origins, and we discover more about these origins as the story progresses.

It works out well as Jasmine protects those under attack and finds a friend that she can fight against. In addition to this, she also finds someone who is responsible for all of this and things click into place.

There is a lot of good action here, with the physical fighting, as well as fighting using magic – I did get a feel of Avatar: The Last Airbender in this story, but I suppose there are only so many tropes to go around.

There is a proper beginning, middle and end here, with some well-done storytelling, that links the past to the present, and adds something for the future.

Where this goes from here though I have no idea – it would be good to see more from here though.
